Since 15 April 2023, Sudan has plunged into an unprecedented humanitarian emergency, spreading nationwide and causing mass displacement, collapsed services, and catastrophic suffering. Nearly two third of the population of the country, over 30 million people, now need assistance, and 10.7 million are displaced. Health and education systems are devastated, with up to 80% of facilities non-functional and 90% of schools closed. Epidemics such as cholera, measles, malaria, and dengue are spreading, while maternal care and immunization are critically disrupted. WASH services are severely limited, leaving 60% of displaced households reliant on unsafe water. Vulnerable groups face grave protection risks, while mental health needs are rising amid minimal psychosocial support. Food insecurity affects 24.6 million people, including 755,000 in acute hunger, compounded by destroyed agriculture, restricted access, and recurring floods.
In response, the Sudanese Red Crescent Society (SRCS) is delivering life-saving aid—food, water, shelter, healthcare, WASH assistance, CEA, and cash assistance—while building resilience through agricultural support, seed banks, veterinary services, and environmental initiatives. SRCS is also strengthening disease surveillance, expanding psychosocial support, and improving protection in displacement sites. Through its National Society Development Department, it is enhancing digital systems, accountability, and volunteer capacity to ensure effective response and to lay the foundation for recovery, rehabilitation, and long-term resilience
